They include contemporary accounts, letters and government records. Near contemporary accounts are also included, often written at the behest of a victor in a phase of the wars, or in chronicles. Secondary sources include some that are written during the Tudor era, based on recollections. Historiography from more modern historians will be added to the site at a later stage.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/m\/moa\/acg8357.0001.001?view=toc\">Froissart&#8217;s Chronicles<\/a> cover to Hundred Years War up to the demise of Richard II. Useful reference material when studying the long term causes of the Wars of the Roses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/c\/cme\/ACV5981.0001.001\/1:2.4.38?rgn=div3;view=toc\">An English Chronicle<\/a>. A Yorkist account of the period up to the Victory at Towton.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"yoast-link-suggestion__value\" href=\"https:\/\/schoolshistory.org.uk\/topics\/hicks-on-the-causes-of-the-wars-from-a-review-by-professor-j-watts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hicks on the causes of the Wars (From a Review by Professor J Watts)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.r3.org\/on-line-library-text-essays\/crowland-chronicle\/\">The Croyland Chronicles<\/a> &#8211; sometimes spelt Crowland. Kelsale was attained in 1484 for his role in the uprisings in the south against Richard III.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newr3.dreamhosters.com\/?page_id=57\">List of essays and chronicles<\/a> &#8211; the Richard III Society provide a good bibliography of essays and chronicles on the period.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarsbank.uoregon.edu\/xmlui\/handle\/1794\/801\">The History of King Richard the Third.<\/a> Thomas More. More&#8217;s history of Richard III was one of the dominant texts on the period for quite some time. Based on accounts he heard and read it doesn&#8217;t always stand up to scrutiny, though it helped to shape opinions about the period for centuries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sceti.library.upenn.edu\/sceti\/printedbooksNew\/index.cfm?textID=halle&amp;PagePosition=1\">Edward Hall: The union of the noble and illustrious families of Lancaster and York<\/a> &#8211; Hall&#8217;s account of the Wars of the Roses came some time after the end of the conflict.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/ebooks\/1949\">On the ruin of Britain<\/a>, Gildas<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"yoast-link-suggestion__value\" href=\"https:\/\/schoolshistory.org.uk\/topics\/richard-duke-of-gloucesters-request-of-the-city-of-york-10th-june-1483\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard, Duke of Gloucester&#8217;s request of the City of York. 10th June 1483.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"yoast-link-suggestion__value\" href=\"https:\/\/schoolshistory.org.uk\/topics\/british-history\/wars-of-the-roses\/richardiii-reputation-north\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">To what extent did Richard III&#8217;s reputation differ in the North from that elsewhere?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.r3.org\/on-line-library-text-essays\/jane-austen\/\">Jane Austen<\/a> poems about the Wars of the Roses. Purely for interest, Austen wrote these as a teenager.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.r3.org\/richard-iii\/the-battle-of-bosworth\/the-ballad-of-bosworth-field\/\">The Ballad of Bosworth Field<\/a> &#8211; famous ballad, hosted on the Richard III Society website.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.hathitrust.org\/Record\/101717635\">The Last of the Barons<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reviews.history.ac.uk\/review\/361\">Review: Writing by women in the later middle ages<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=NKAKAAAAYAAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=editions:0l04ySS4lXFIqdoYDonlKj&amp;lr=&amp;redir_esc=y#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">Original letters illustrative of English History<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/c\/cme\/Paston\">The Paston Letters<\/a> &#8211; The Paston family rose through the ranks following the Black Death to become important landowners by the end of the Medieval era. Their correspondence has survived and provides a wonderful insight into many aspects of life. In relation to the Wars of the Roses, the letters are of value when looking at the local issues in East Anglia and the way in which the wars were used by nobles to try and make gains of land and power. In particular, at Caister Castle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d.lib.rochester.edu\/teams\/publication\/staley-the-book-of-margery-kempe\">The Book of Margery Kemp<\/a> &#8211; written in East Anglia this is a quite radical book. Margery Kemp is representative of the new type of woman emerging in medieval towns, she is a guild member and though devotional at times, is putting forward ideas that for the time were quite radical. Notes in the surviving copies suggest links with Mount Grace in Yorkshire as well as East Anglia. The Book presents us with a picture of the way in which towns had developed by the reign of Henry VI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.british-history.ac.uk\/search\/series\/cal-close-rolls--edw4\">Edward IV Calendar of Close Rolls<\/a>.\u00a0 British History Online provides a translation of the original Close Rolls from the reign of Edward IV.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/librivox.org\/margaret-of-anjou-by-jacob-abbott\/\">Audio Book &#8211; Margaret of Anjou<\/a>. 19th Century history recorded as a CD.
