Religion shaped many aspects of life in ancient Egypt, from royal monuments and festivals to ideas about illness, healing and death. The Egyptians worshipped many gods, each associated with different aspects of the natural world and human experience. Religious beliefs influenced how people understood disease and sought protection from harm. Prayers, rituals and practical remedies could form part of the same approach to healing. Medical papyri, funerary texts, temple inscriptions and archaeological evidence help historians investigate the relationship between religion and medicine.<\/p>\n

Religion and medicine in ancient Egypt<\/h2>\n

Religious beliefs influenced explanations of illness and the treatments people sought. Some conditions were associated with identifiable injuries or physical symptoms, while others might be attributed to supernatural forces. Egyptian healing could combine examination, diagnosis, prescriptions and practical treatment with spells or incantations. It is therefore misleading to divide ancient Egyptian healing into separate categories of medicine and magic as though these were necessarily opposing approaches.<\/p>\n

Different gods were associated with protection, disease and healing. Sekhmet, a lion-headed goddess, was connected with both destructive forces, including pestilence, and healing. Her priests had an association with the treatment of illness. Other deities, including Serqet, were invoked in connection with particular dangers, such as scorpion and snake bites. Religious belief could consequently influence both how an illness was understood and which forms of protection or treatment were sought.<\/p>\n

Evidence for the people involved in healing suggests that several titles were used. The Egyptian term swnw<\/em> referred to a physician. Other designations included an exorciser associated with Serqet and a pure-priest of Sekhmet. These roles may have reflected different responsibilities, but the precise boundaries between them are uncertain. University College London’s research on titles of healers in ancient Egypt<\/a> explains that practitioners with different titles could use medical writings containing treatments, prescriptions and incantations.<\/p>\n

This evidence challenges the idea that Egyptian doctors were simply priests or that all healing was religious. Practical treatment and religious observance could coexist, and the surviving evidence does not establish that every practitioner followed the same approach. Religion also shaped attitudes towards death and the body. Mummification involved removing certain internal organs as part of preparing the deceased for burial and the afterlife. This exposed embalmers to aspects of human anatomy, but it is uncertain how far their knowledge was shared with physicians. Embalmers and medical practitioners had different roles, and the evidence does not demonstrate that mummification produced a systematic understanding of anatomy.<\/p>\n

Preserving the body was important to Egyptian funerary traditions, although practices varied over time and between individuals. These beliefs influenced the treatment of the dead, but they should not be taken as proof that religious restrictions alone prevented anatomical research. Ideas about purity and cleanliness were also important in religious settings. Priests followed purification practices, and temples had requirements for ritual cleanliness. These practices should not be confused with a modern understanding of hygiene or public health. The Nile supplied water for drinking, domestic use and agriculture, but the existence of ritual purification does not by itself demonstrate a systematic public-health programme.<\/p>\n

Medical texts provide more direct evidence of how religious beliefs and practical treatment could work together. The surviving healing papyri<\/a> include prescriptions, descriptions of symptoms and treatments, as well as incantations. For example, the Edwin Smith Papyrus presents structured examinations of injuries and recommendations for treatment, while other medical texts contain remedies combined with ritual words. The evidence suggests a varied tradition of healing rather than a single, uniform system. Funerary texts in ancient Egypt<\/h2>\n

Ancient Egyptian funerary texts developed over many centuries. They contained spells, prayers and instructions intended to help the deceased overcome dangers and reach the afterlife. The earliest surviving examples include the Pyramid Texts, inscribed inside royal pyramids during the Old Kingdom. The Coffin Texts appeared mainly on coffins during the First Intermediate Period and Middle Kingdom, making funerary spells available beyond the royal context. These traditions overlapped and developed over time rather than simply replacing one another.<\/p>\n

The collection commonly called the Book of the Dead<\/strong> became prominent during the New Kingdom. It was not a single, standard book. Instead, it consisted of spells that could be selected and arranged differently in individual manuscripts. The number and selection of spells varied, and no single papyrus contained every spell associated with the tradition.<\/p>\n

These texts provide important evidence for Egyptian religious beliefs, including ideas about protection, judgement and the afterlife. They are not medical textbooks, however, and should not be used on their own as evidence for the treatments or training of Egyptian doctors.<\/p>\n

The weighing of the heart was an important scene in some versions of the Book of the Dead. The deceased’s heart was weighed against the feather associated with Ma’at, the principle of truth, justice and cosmic order. Anubis is commonly shown overseeing the weighing, while Thoth records the result. The scene represents judgement after death rather than a medical procedure.<\/p>\n

The illustrations in funerary papyri helped communicate religious ideas about the deceased’s journey and the protection needed along the way. The precise scenes and spells varied between manuscripts. Images should therefore be identified from their actual contents rather than assumed to depict the same event or group of gods.<\/p>\n

The Amduat<\/h3>\n

The Amduat<\/strong>, often translated as the Book of What Is in the Underworld, is a different funerary text. It describes the sun god Ra’s journey through the underworld during the twelve hours of night. The journey involves encounters with gods, dangers and forces associated with death and renewal.<\/p>\n

The Amduat was particularly associated with royal tombs during the New Kingdom. Its texts and images described the sun god’s passage through the underworld and the regeneration associated with his return. The journey is complex, involving different beings and events across the hours of night; it should not be reduced to a single moment when the pharaoh becomes one with Ra. The Amduat is distinct from the Book of the Dead, which was a collection of spells that varied between individual manuscripts.<\/p>\n

These funerary traditions demonstrate how closely religion, death and the afterlife were connected in ancient Egyptian culture. Their relevance to medicine lies mainly in the beliefs that shaped attitudes towards the body, illness and death. Medical practice itself must also be studied through medical papyri, titles of healers and archaeological evidence. The development of Egyptian medical knowledge can be placed in a wider chronological context by comparing it with earlier prehistoric healing<\/a> and later developments in ancient Greek medicine<\/a> and Roman medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n
