The English wars are conventionally divided into three phases: the First English Civil War (1642–1646), the Second English Civil War (1648) and the Third English Civil War (1650–1651). The Irish Confederate Wars began in 1641 and continued until 1653.

Causes of the English Civil Wars

Disagreements over royal authority, taxation and religion undermined relations between Charles I and Parliament. The king’s personal rule, attempts to raise revenue without parliamentary consent and religious tensions contributed to the political crisis that led to war.

Causes of the English Civil Wars

The Three English Civil Wars

The defeat of the main Royalist armies in 1646 did not settle the future of the monarchy or the relationship between king, Parliament and army. Fighting resumed in 1648, followed by a campaign against Charles II and his Scottish supporters in 1650–1651.

First English Civil War (1642–1646)

Second English Civil War (1648)

Third English Civil War (1650–1651)

Battles and Military Organisation

The outcome of battles, control of key regions and the ability to maintain armies shaped the course of the wars. Parliament’s creation of the New Model Army in 1645 marked a significant change in its military organisation.

First Battle of Newbury (1643)

Battle of Marston Moor (1644)

The New Model Army

Ireland and Scotland

The conflict extended beyond England. Scotland’s religious and political disputes with Charles I helped trigger the crisis of the late 1630s, while the Irish Rebellion of 1641 developed into a complex conflict involving Catholic Confederates, Royalists, Parliamentarians and Scottish forces. These wars had their own causes and objectives but were closely connected to the struggle for power across the Stuart kingdoms.

Irish Confederate Wars (1641–1653)

Wars of the Three Kingdoms (1639–1651)

The Execution of Charles I and the Commonwealth

The dispute over England’s government culminated in the trial and execution of Charles I in January 1649. The monarchy was abolished and England became a republic, but the Commonwealth faced continuing military campaigns, political divisions and opposition.

Execution of Charles I (1649)

The Commonwealth (1649–1653)

Oliver Cromwell and the Protectorate

Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector in 1653. The Protectorate relied heavily on military power, while disagreements over political authority, religion and the role of the army persisted. The execution of Charles I, the Commonwealth and the Protectorate tested alternative forms of government. Although the Restoration returned the monarchy, the conflict continued to influence debates about the powers of the Crown, Parliament and religion. Across the British Isles, military campaigns and political upheaval also brought extensive disruption, particularly in Ireland, where conquest and settlement had lasting consequences for landownership and political power.

The English Civil Wars (1642–1651) transformed the government, monarchy and political life of England.
