England had become a Commonwealth, but the monarchy retained support in Scotland and among Royalists elsewhere in the British Isles. The struggle formed part of the wider Wars of the Three Kingdoms (1639–1651).

Charles II and the Scottish alliance

The Scottish government rejected the execution of Charles I and recognised his son as Charles II. However, the Scots required the new king to accept Presbyterian religious principles and the Covenants. Charles agreed to these terms and arrived in Scotland in June 1650.

The alliance presented the English Commonwealth with a renewed military threat. Oliver Cromwell, having led the campaign in Ireland, returned to confront the Scottish army. Parliamentarian leaders were concerned that a Scottish invasion could encourage Royalist support in England and undermine the new republican government.

The Battle of Dunbar, 1650

Cromwell led the English army into Scotland during the summer of 1650. The Scottish commander, David Leslie, initially avoided a decisive engagement, using the terrain and his army’s positions to restrict Parliamentarian movements. Shortages of supplies and sickness placed Cromwell’s forces under considerable pressure.

On 3 September 1650, the armies fought at the Battle of Dunbar. Cromwell’s forces defeated the Scottish army, inflicting a major setback on the Covenanter government and Charles II’s prospects of restoring the monarchy. The victory strengthened Parliamentarian control in southern Scotland, although the war continued.

The Scottish invasion of England, 1651

Despite the defeat at Dunbar, Charles II and his Scottish supporters continued their campaign. Charles was crowned King of Scots at Scone on 1 January 1651. The Scottish army subsequently faced renewed pressure from Cromwell’s forces, which advanced through Scotland and threatened its remaining military positions.

In the summer of 1651, Charles and his army marched south into England. The strategy depended on gaining support from English Royalists and recruiting additional troops as the army advanced towards London. However, the expected widespread rising did not take place, and the invading army remained predominantly Scottish.

Cromwell pursued the Royalist army as it moved through England. Parliamentarian forces gathered reinforcements and prepared to confront Charles before he could reach the capital.

The Battle of Worcester, 1651

The decisive engagement took place at Worcester on 3 September 1651. Charles II’s army was substantially outnumbered by the Parliamentarian forces under Cromwell. Fighting took place around the city and its approaches as Parliamentarian troops attacked the Royalist positions.

The Royalist army was defeated, ending Charles II’s immediate attempt to regain the throne by military force. Thousands of Scottish soldiers were killed or captured, while Charles escaped capture and eventually fled into exile in France. The Historic England battlefield report for Worcester describes the campaign and the battlefield’s landscape.

Consequences of the Third English Civil War

The defeat at Worcester ended the main Royalist military campaign against the English Commonwealth. Charles II remained in exile, and the prospect of restoring the monarchy by force receded. The victory also strengthened Cromwell’s position as a leading military and political figure within the republican regime.

Parliamentarian control extended across Scotland, which was incorporated into the Commonwealth alongside England and Ireland. The Commonwealth nevertheless faced continuing political and constitutional difficulties, and military victory did not resolve disagreements over how the three kingdoms should be governed.

Cromwell’s growing political authority eventually led to the establishment of the Protectorate in 1653. The republican regime continued through a period of instability after Cromwell’s death in 1658, before the restoration of Charles II in 1660 brought the monarchy back to England.

Further Reading

Historic England, English Heritage Battlefield Report: Worcester 1651.

Michael Hodgetts, Elizabethan Priest-Holes: VI—The Escape of Charles II, British Catholic History, vol. 14, issue 2, 1977, pp. 97–126.

William Matthews (ed.), Charles II’s Escape from Worcester: A Collection of Narratives Assembled by Samuel Pepys, University of California Press, originally published 1966.

The Third English Civil War (1650–1651) was fought between the English Commonwealth and Royalist forces supporting Charles II, who sought to recover the throne following the execution of his father, Charles I.
