John de la Pole was son of John de la Pole, 2nd<\/sup> Duke of Suffolk and King Edward IV<\/a> and Richard IIIs<\/a> sister, Elizabeth of York. His relationship to the Yorkist kings, coupled with the attainder of George, Duke of Clarence led to him being the heir designate following the death of Edward of Middleham.<\/p>\n

John was created the Earl of Lincoln by his uncle, Edward IV. When Richard became king, it was Lincoln who was given the role of being president of the Council of the North.<\/p>\n

In line with Tudor policy, he was treated quite well following the defeat of Richard III at Bosworth<\/a>, receiving annuities of around \u00a3500 per annum.<\/p>\n

He is best known for his role in the rebellion of 1487. Lincoln travelled to Burgundy to gain the financial support from his aunt, Margaret, for a Yorkist army.<\/p>\n

The funds were forthcoming, and it led to the appearance of Lambert Simnel, claiming to be one of the missing Princes in the Tower. Lincoln held a command in the Yorkist army. He was killed fighting against Henry Tudor\u2019s<\/a> army at the Battle of Stoke Field in 1487<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
