Online CPD for Primary History Teachers (KS2)

This online CPD course will run on a Moodle-based Virtual Learning Environment hosted by The course contains twelve units. Each of these is scheduled to have detailed input for one week each, though all areas will remain open for discussion after the scheduled week. Materials in each unit will typically take 1 to 2 hours to read, digest and respond to. The objective is to provide ongoing support that enhances your KS2 teaching in the long term. There is no compulsion to log in every day/week, schools are busy places and the materials and support will be there at the times that suit you best.

The course will begin on 6th January 2020 with a welcome and introductory week, followed by 12 weekly units as outlined below.

Knowledge Rich History Classroom

Weekly Units:

  1. Assessment and progression. Including, parental engagement.

  2. Incorporating Local History.

  3. Understanding Chronology, including continuity and change; and Developing and awareness of Historical Interpretations.

  4. Historical Enquiries: making them work for you, the children and the curriculum objectives.

  5. Developing Knowledge and retention of knowledge in History.

  6. Teaching and Learning Activities and Ideas, including History outside the classroom.

  7. World Studies: which will be based on user feedback as to topics covered.

  8. Changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age

  9. The Roman Empire and its impact on Britain

  10. Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots

  11. The Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor

  12. A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066

Resources and activities used in the course delivery:

  • Video, some to enhance your subject knowledge, others suggested as stimulus material for lessons.

  • Podcasts, where appropriate links to subject-specific podcasts will be provided. These are designed to boost your understanding of the various periods covered at KS2.

  • Reading material. With an emphasis on ‘Knowledge Rich’ learning, the course will provide examples of the latest academic research into relevant areas.

  • Resources and Activity Ideas. Both supported with explanation and opportunities to discuss different approaches.

  • Interactive tasks. Some for you to try, others for you to consider using with your classes.

  • Structured discussions. Based on teaching and learning issues/techniques.

Users will receive details of how to log in and access the course via email in December.

Course leaders

Dan Moorhouse taught in Primary, Middle and Secondary Schools. He was an Advanced Skills Teacher who sat on the HA Secondary Committee and ran CPD for the HA and SHP.

Glenn Carter is the subject lead for History at a Primary School in the north of England. He sits on the HA Primary Committee and provides CPD on history teaching on a regular basis.
