Bayeux Tapestry Sequencing and labelling task

A straightforward chronological sequence task. To reinforce pupils awareness of the order of events of 1066, they are asked to place events as shown in the Bayeux Tapestry into the correct chronological order. They then label the images using either the suggested statements or their own words.

This task could form the basis of a display on 1066 or be used as a starting point on a more detailed study of the events of 1066.

1066 was a major turning point in English History. The death of Edward the Confessor left England with no clear designated heir. The crown was claimed quickly by Harold Godwinson of Wessex. There were though counterclaims. Harold Hardrada had a claim through his grandfather. William of Normandy claimed that he had been named heir by Edward the Confessor. Edgar Atheling had a claim through blood ties. Two of these men launched invasions in 1066 to seize the throne. It led to two major battles in the north of the country, at Fulford and Stamford Bridge, as Saxon England fought the invading Hardrada. Soon afterward, William of Normandy landed on the South Coast. At the Battle of Hastings his Norman invaders defeated the Saxon army of Harold Godwinson. The Normans had begun their conquest of England.
